1 Chapter 4 Section 2

2 Bell Ringer Provide two examples of sensory adaptation
Define absolute threshold Find the JND A 300 lb couch A 75 lb middle schooler

3 Today Bell Ringer Signal Detection Theory
Crash Course Video (13 minutes) Read pages Complete the Eye Diagram

4 Signal Distraction Theory
So psychophysics has a more complex view of detecting stimulus in the environment (that tries to take into account things that impact our response) Signal Detection Theory Involves decision making processes that are influenced by more than stimulus intensity! Hits (detecting signals when they are present) False alarm (detecting signals when they are not present) Miss (not detecting signals when they are present) Correction rejection (not detecting signals when they are absent)

5 Hit False Alarm Miss Correct Rejection ACTUAL STIMULUS CONDITION
Present Absent Absent Present Hit False Alarm Miss Correct Rejection SUBJECT’S RESPONSE

6 To do this, you set CRITERION
Involves a higher mental process rather than raw sensation- depends on your expectations and consequences of missing a signal or reporting a false alarm Noise- all irrelevant stimuli in the environment and the neural activity that they elicit (imagine radio static)
