Is it Right . . . RIGHT FOR YOU? College campus interviewing is only one of many different ways to find employment. Whether it is right for you depends on a variety of personal circumstances. Only you can evaluate whether campus interviewing is right for you. In the past, it has been right for a very high percentage of our graduates taking X420. For many of you, there is no easier or more efficient and effective method of obtaining your first job upon graduation. Should you spend the time and the effort to register and interview within the CSO? Many people think it's well worth it. Let's look at some of the reasons why you might consider using the CSO for interviewing purposes. for You?

Corporate America COLLEGE CAMPUS INTERVIEWING Who are the employers who recruit on college campuses? For the most part, they are corporate America, the largest employers in the world. They tend to be medium to large business firms. Corporate America turns to college campuses because they must have the brightest and best minds to run these organizations in the future.

Potential Executives COLLEGE CAMPUS INTERVIEWING On the surface, it looks as if employers are hiring bright college graduates to do a job today that will add dollars to corporate profits immediately. In reality, they are looking far beyond the first job after college. Corporate management is seeking talent today to run the business of tomorrow. By definition, that talent has to come from college campuses. If large or medium corporate America is not your desire, you will find that what you learn from campus interviewing will greatly aid in your success with smaller firms as well.

In many ways, the wealth of America has come from business corporations both large and small. You are going to have to get involved in interviewing, whether on or off campus, if you want an opportunity to work in a business enterprise. Your piece of the economic pie may become reality because of your preparation, and participation, in campus interviewing. Without participating now, you may never get another chance. . . . a piece of the pie

6 Employers Rely on Colleges
Don't hold interviews at their facility Never contact resume submittees Rely on selected colleges COLLEGE NEEDS LIMITED Many firms do not interview much at their facilities. Applicants are simply told to send a resume and that they will be called for an interview if an opening matching their credentials materializes. Employers often rely on getting the quality and quantity of candidates they need via on-campus interviews. Given limited needs, they may only visit a very select list of top schools like Indiana. With many firms, you just cannot get a foot in the door without going through on-campus interviews. With many, you can't get a foot in the door!

ON-CAMPUS RECRUITING It would be foolish for an employer to sit back and hope that the best talent from America's best colleges would just happen to walk in the door. College recruiting is an expensive way for employers to identify, interview, and select the potential executives and managers of tomorrow. It would be equally foolish for the best college graduates to sit back and hope that the best employer would just happen to call them for an interview. Campus interviewing is an expensive and time consuming activity for both parties. The key parties must obviously get together. The key ingredient in the middle is the university career services office. Some, maybe most, universities play the role of educator only. Like employers, Indiana University has taken a much more pragmatic and practical approach to helping the various parties get together in the CSO. Best employers don't wait! Best graduates don’t wait! Expensive but proactive employer attitude.

8 College Campus Interviewing Why do major corporations recruit?
ONE REASON: Competition for the best talent! NUMBER ONE Why do employers recruit? Because they have to! They need talent to survive. There is always enormous competition for the best talent. Without this people talent, employers can't survive! The main reason employers take a proactive stance in college recruiting is that they cannot afford to let the best talent go elsewhere. They compete with each other. Our entire free enterprise system is built on this competitive spirit. If employers do not compete aggressively in the most fertile grounds for quality people, in the long run they are a dead business. Because of Indiana's reputation, you are a step ahead of your competition. Best talent = profits and survival

9 College Campus Interviewing Why should graduates interview?
ONE REASON: Best jobs are often filled early! WHY INTERVIEW? Employers need you. But you have to put yourself in front of the employers who can provide the proper career environment for you. Since they need you, why should you go out looking for employment? Because you have competition. The best qualified people are not always the ones who get the best jobs. The best jobs are usually filled early. Employers don't have the luxury of waiting until they have seen all of the college graduates. They start recruiting about one year before graduation and continually hire talent as they see it. If you wait, there may be no good jobs left for you to consider. That happens to thousands of graduates each year, especially in soft job markets.

Special advantages Once in a lifetime CAMPUS INTERVIEWING ADVANTAGES Many employers hire no one for management potential jobs who they have not seen on a college campus. They are aggressive recruiters; they cannot afford to be passive. In essence, you have a “once in a lifetime” opportunity. You will never have another opportunity to look over a list of top organizations and say, “I think I will talk to these.” After you graduate, the employer is looking at the class behind you. They do not go back and re-look at last year's class. They figure that the best have been hired by the competition.

Highly competitive Only best universities Track superior talent National in Scope COLLEGE RECRUITING NATIONAL IN SCOPE The other major advantage to college recruiting is that it is national in scope. Employers come from everywhere to recruit. They locate and centrally track superior talent. Once you leave campus, you will find employment is very local in nature. Hires are for specific jobs to fill. And if the headquarters does not have a hand in the hiring, it is unlikely to be tracking you for management potential.

12 Campus Interviewing Results
Not for everyone! CAMPUS INTERVIEWING RESULTS Statistics from the past tell us that on-campus interviewing is not for everyone. Although a very high percentage of I.U. students usually interview on campus, only about 70 percent get job offers through this method. About 90 percent are placed but not solely through campus recruiting. The only way you are going to know if this is right for you is to try it. 90% usually interview 70% get job offers on campus 100% get jobs

Kelley School of Business has invested many resources in this approach over many years. When we see our alumni leading the major U.S. corporations, banks, retailers, public accounting firms, government agencies, owning small firms, and so on, we are inclined to continue supporting on-campus recruiting. Campus interviewing is an activity that you should take seriously and use to enhance your job search success.

Techniques and methods can be taught in a theory framework which has lasting benefits even to older alums. Career education at both the undergraduate and graduate level is a central theme: teach graduates to help themselves. But efforts do not stop there; teaching is supplemented with an aggressive policy of recruiting employers to campus. This process is managed very efficiently. Reputable firms regularly advertise! See: The Wall Street Journal Wall Street Journal CAREER ASSESSMENT FIRMS When you graduate you may be approached by one of the many private assessment firms that do exactly what the CSO is doing. These very reputable firms advertise regularly in the Wall Street Journal.

16 Career Assessment Firms
Program costs $ plus $50-80 per appointment CAREER ASSESSMENT FIRMS The major difference is that they charge a $3,000-$4,000 registration fee plus $50-$80 per appointment hour. Like the CSO, they provide career advice and service. They provide no job guarantees. They are successful and necessary. But until you graduate, we recommend that you take advantage of the on-campus alternative which is much less expensive. Provide advice, not placement!

17 CSO Services No job guarantee anywhere Quality service inexpensively
Invited to use CSO SERVICES Indiana University's CSO cannot guarantee you a job offer, but neither can the high priced alternatives. We do offer a well planned, quality service, in a highly organized environment at an inexpensive price. A typical employment agency charges 25-30% of your first year's salary. Most alumni tell us that our level of professional service is usually found to be superior to off-campus alternatives.
