Some states with slaves chose to stay in the union. (Border States) Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware

His election by only northern states causes the south to secede in 1860 #1 Goal is to PRESERVE THE UNION Expands the power of the presidency (Suspension of Habeus Corpus) Emancipation Proclamation

6 Confederate (Rebel) advantages
Confederates had excellent generals -Robert E. Lee and “Stonewall” Jackson Better trained soldiers Knowledge of Terrain Because of this many early battles are won by the confederacy

7 Emancipation Proclamation 1863
It freed the slaves only in states that have seceded from the Union. Battle tactic to hurt south It did not free slaves in border states. Created to help North win the war Gained Abolitionist support African Americans can fight
