Elements of Art: Value “Hand with Reflecting Sphere,” M.C. Escher
2
What is Value? Value is the lightness or darkness of a color.
Objective: to identify, examine, and draw values (light and dark).
3
Value is connected to light and how that light hits an object.
4
We see things because light reflects off of objects and goes into our eyes.
Without light, we cannot see anything. Value is important to identify where light is in a drawing and/or painting.
5
A full range of value means that there is plenty of Light values called tints:
Dark values called shades: To have a full range of value in your artwork you may create a value scale:
6
The whole point to value….
-Creates the illusion of light, highlights and shadows. -Highlights and shadows combine to create the illusion of a light source. Remember, without light we cannot see. Without a light source, you have no illusion. Light Source Highlight Shadow
