Warm-Up: Write the rule in pink & complete the practices (in blue) on warm-up page. On Fri. we’ll have open-note quiz on comma rules discussed this week! Comma Rule #1: Use commas between two independent clauses that are joined by a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). Independent clause: group of words that contains a subject & verb & expresses a complete thought. Example: Many students enjoy working on computers, so teachers are finding new ways to use them in the classroom. Practice (rewrite sentences, adding commas where needed): Hockey players have a lot of gear but their most important pieces of equipment are their skates. The quality of the ice affects skating so stadiums take care to maintain their rinks.

Warm-Up: Write the comma rule in pink and then complete the 2 practices in blue
Comma Rule #2: Use comma after dependent clause that starts a sentence (comma not necessary if dependent clause follows independent clause). Dependent Clause: a group of words that has a subject/verb but does not express a complete thought.) Practice: Write sentence and add commas as necessary. Example: After we go to church, let’s eat. (dependent clause underlined) When I got to Anna’s house I was greeted by her puppy Ricky. We ate dinner after we visited for a while. After we had dinner we saw a movie.

Persuasive Essay due date: February 16th (Friday) New Year’s Resolution is now an extra credit opportunity. To get extra credit for it, you must complete at least one check-in and your log by this Friday 2/9.

Warm-Up: Write Comma Rule 3 & Complete Practices
Comma Rule #3: Use commas after introductory adverbs and phrases (adverbs/phrases that start sentence). Introductory adverbs usually end in -ly. Introductory phrase: group of related words that don’t have subject/verb. Examples: Incidentally, I was not late this morning. (introductory adverb) Hoping for the best, she approached her mother. (introductory phrase) Practice (write out entire sentence and add commas as necessary) Cautiously Fiona walked up the stairs. To arrive on time we must leave here by six.

Warm-Up - Write the comma rule down & do the practices
Comma Rule 4: Use commas to separate three or more words, phrases, or clauses written in a series. Practice: The Constitution establishes the legislative executive and judicial branches of government. The candidate promised to lower taxes protect the environment reduce crime and end unemployment.
