Imagery is the words or phrases a writer uses to represent people, objects, actions, feelings, and ideas descriptively by appealing to the senses.

Denotation is the exact meaning of the word Connotation gives the reader a distinct impression, calling on emotion rather than fact.

Pay attention to a words being used. Each word can change a sentence dramatically. When we look at an authors diction, we look at an authors word choice.

What is syntax? Syntax is how the author arranges the words and the order of grammatical elements in a sentence.

Tone Tone is the AUTHOR’S attitude towards the audience, the subject, or the character You can recognize the tone/attitude by the language/word choices the author uses. His language will reveal his perspective/opinion (that is, whether it is positive/negative) about the subject.

Have a healthy “tone vocabulary” Consider some words that describe tone. Sarcastic, sincere, embarrassed, proud or frightened The key to choosing the correct tone is to carefully consider the author’s word choice.
