Vanderbilt’s Opportunity
OFFICE OF THE VICE PROVOST FOR RESEARCH Vanderbilt’s Opportunity The 2014 total Higher Education R&D (HERD) expenditures in the US from all sources were $67B. The top 30 institutions, including Vanderbilt, received $25B. $42B was awarded to the other institutions. There is ample room for Vanderbilt to gain more resources from external sponsors, but … We will need to plan and resource our faculty for success!

My Approach Vanderbilt first: focus on collaboration and partnerships across all campus entities Faculty first: support faculty, staff, and students to facilitate multiplicative returns from researcher effort Partnerships for success: seek university, corporate and non-profit partnerships for sustainable support and growth of research, scholarship, and creativity

Building the Capacity to Lead
OFFICE OF THE VICE PROVOST FOR RESEARCH Building the Capacity to Lead A&S and OVPR: How can we build the capacity to lead through discovery and scholarship? Initiatives to streamline research operations: Lightweight & transparent processes for export control, IRB, VISA etc. Sponsored research policies that facilitate faculty e.g., matching Initiatives to grow research portfolio What are the priorities at A&S, and how do they align with the “big opportunities” in research discovery, creativity, and experiential learning, such as the Brain Initiative, Precision Medicine, Big Data, Inclusivity in STEM? How can the OVPR facilitate A&S faculty-led success in NSF Science and Technology Centers (STC), DHS Centers on International Policy for global threats, USAID/UN for global disparities & interventions; and Foundations such as Gates, Simon, and Moore? Increase recognition of VU research and faculty and develop & international partnerships f All in consultation with faculty--Vanderbilt University Research Council and other ad-hoc committees

OFFICE OF THE VICE PROVOST FOR RESEARCH Enhancing Success Rates in Prestigious Opportunities Post-Award Developing capacity & teams Pre-Award Single PI award rates have decreased, but multi-PI and “team science” awards have increased Program development: team-building well-ahead of RFP & leveraging limited submissions pre- and post-award services to enhance success rates proposal development support to increase researcher productivity & competitive edge
