Electronic Citations – What and Why?
Defined: “the practice of having law enforcement print out a ticket on-site while simultaneously sending a copy to the court via wireless technology” Why? Increase efficiency Eliminate the need for reliance on handwritten documents

Problem and Initial Solution
Problem: Who pays for the electronic citation? Solution: In 2010, Illinois implemented a fee for electronic citations on guilty defendants Fee is $5 60% goes to the Circuit Court Clerk Electronic Citation Fund 40% goes to the law enforcement agency which made the arrest

Further Implementation
Many states have since tried to pass similar bills, with varying levels of success Many variations of the bill include Illinois’s original 60%/40% split, though some have their own percentages Most fees are $5
