1 Cellular Respiration

2 We all know we get energy from the food we eat. But how?
To figure this out, we need to look smaller. At a cellular level.

3 Photosynthesis, where does it happen?
If photosynthesis happens in plant cells (chloroplasts) where do you think cellular respiration happens in animal cells? Turn and talk to your neighbor. Write down your guess.

4 Where does cellular respiration happen?
-Inside animal cells -Starts in the cytoplasm, but mostly happens in the mitochondria (powerhouse of the cell).

5 We said photosynthesis and cellular respiration go hand in hand
We said photosynthesis and cellular respiration go hand in hand. Let’s figure out why. What does photosynthesis produce? What does it need? What do you think cellular respiration produces? What does it need? -Turn and talk to your neighbor. Write down your hypothesis.

6 What are the reactants and products in cellular respiration?
Reactants = Oxygen and Glucose. Products = Carbon Dioxide, Water, ATP (Stored Energy)

7 Formula for cellular respiration
Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration have opposite formulas.

8 Bringing it back to the digestive system...
-Our digestive system breaks down fats, carbohydrates, proteins, sugars into simpler molecules (glucose). -From there, each cell can use that glucose we get from food and oxygen we get from the atmosphere to create stored energy.
