2. Quotes What is a quote? Why do we use quotes?
To repeat a passage (ideas/thoughts of another)
Used to attribute the enclosed text to someone else
Why do we use quotes?
Support paper
Helps prove ideas of writer
Always quote a credible source
Example:
Pinky = Bad Brain = Good

3. Formatting: Short Quotes
Short quotations - fewer than four typed lines
Enclose quotation within double quotation marks
Provide author and specific page citation (in verse – provide line numbers) in the text
Example: (Burke 3)
Include complete reference on Works Cited page
Example:

Punctuation marks (periods, commas, semicolons) appear AFTER the parenthetical citation
Question marks and exclamation points
Appear WITHIN quotation marks IF part of quoted passage
Appear AFTER parenthetical citation IF part of your text

5. Short Quotations - Examples
According to some, dreams express "profound aspects of personality" (Foulkes 184), though others disagree.
According to Foulkes's study, dreams may express "profound aspects of personality" (184).
Is it possible that dreams may express "profound aspects of personality" (Foulkes 184)?
One of my favorite movie quotes is “You’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?” (Dirty Harry).
Cullen concludes, "Of all the things that happened there/ That's all I remember" (11-12).
Mark breaks in short quotations of verse with slash, /, at the end of each line of verse

6. Formatting: Long Quotes
Quotations longer than four typed lines
Omit quotation marks
Start quotation on a new line
Entire quote indented one inch from left margin; maintain double-spacing
IF citing multiple paragraphs
Only indent first line of the quotation by a half inch
Parenthetical citation comes after closing punctuation mark
Quoting verse – maintain original line breaks
"Go long!"

7. Long Quotations - Examples
Example #1 – (Notice colon after lead in to quote)
Nelly Dean treats Heathcliff poorly and dehumanizes him throughout her narration:
They entirely refused to have it in bed with them, or even In their room, and I had no more sense, so, I put it on the landing of the stairs, hoping it would be gone on the morrow. By chance, or else attracted by hearing his voice, it crept to Mr. Earnshaw's door, and there he found it on quitting his chamber. (Bronte 78)
