Urban vs. Rural In the early 1900s, geographers noticed drastic differences between people who lived in urban and rural areas. Sociologist Louis Wirth described how the life of a city dweller and a rural dweller were different in the 1930s. Wirth defined a city as a permanent settlement that has three characteristics: LARGE size High density Social heterogeneity

How do social differences in rural vs. urban residents compare in LDCs and MDCs? 90 or more % of people in MDCs hold service-based jobs. Virtually everyone owns cars, phones, TVs, computers, etc. Modern transportation has also minimized these differences.

Due to size, global cities have retail services with huge market areas. Disproportionate # of wealthy leads to availability of luxury items Most plays, concerts, operas, night clubs, restaurants, bars, sports Largest museums, libraries, theatres More plays in London than all of UK combined; nearly as many theatres in NYC than rest of US combined
