In the early 1900s, geographers noticed drastic differences between people who lived in urban and rural areas. Sociologist Louis Wirth described how the life of a city dweller and a rural dweller were different in the 1930s. Wirth defined a city as a permanent settlement that has three characteristics:

90 or more % of people in MDCs hold service-based jobs. Virtually everyone owns cars, phones, TVs, computers, etc. Modern transportation has also minimized these differences.
