How to answer the question that is asked!
FRQs How to answer the question that is asked!
3
APES FRQ Language Environmental Ecological Economical Social/Societal
Human Health Identify Describe Discuss Explain Calculate
4
Environmental Talk about biotic and abiotic factors in the environment/ ecosystem- never people! Plants, animals, soil, water and air quality
5
Ecological Talk about biotic factors in the environment/ community- never people! Plants, animals, fungi and bacteria
6
Economic Talk about how the topic affects money and jobs! Include the words “money” and “jobs” in your answer to ensure you get the point- never plants or animals here!
7
Social/ Societal Talk about HUMANS!!
Buildings, crops, human diseases, laws, human birth and deaths rates
8
Human Health Talk about human diseases
respiratory damage, lung cancer, skin cancer, nervous system damage, reproductive disorders
9
Identify One Idea Example: When is homecoming? Prom is October 18.
Be careful not to continue on and answer incorrectly--you will lose the point. Homecoming is October 18. It starts tomorrow- NO POINT! 2014 FRQ Example- Climate change will occur with increased concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which can cause a big hole in the ozone layer. NO POINT
10
Describe One Idea- One Process
Must communicate all the information about the process (all steps/ all parts) Example: Describe how you would purchase a homecoming ticket. Where, when , how much, and whether or not you can pay with a check or must pay with cash are all details that someone needs to know.
11
Discuss Similar to “describe” except these questions seemed to be linked to cause and effect ideas rather than processes. One point is generally awarded for the cause and the effect linked. You must have both parts in your answer to earn the one point.
12
Discuss Practice Discuss the potential outcome of drinking alcohol during the homecoming game. The answer is not just “pregnancy”---that would be an “identify”question. This “Discuss” question requires the cause (action) and the effect (outcome). Example: Failing to wear a condom or using other preventative measures while having sex on prom night may result in pregnancy and the birth of a child 9 months later. Notice I did not repeat the stem of the question in my answer but worded it to communicate that I know the definition of “unprotected sex”. This is important to ensure points are earned. I also did not say ALWAYS or will DEFINITELY result in pregnancy because that is not a true statement. Try not to use “always” in your answers. It is safer to say “ will most likely” result…..
13
Explain For “Explain” questions, pick TWO ideas (processes) related to the topic of the question and explain each in detail. “Explain” questions must have three parts- Identify the idea (process) Give the “how” the process works Give the “why” the process is significant or the outcome
14
Explain Practice Explain how you will get ready for the homecoming dance. Pick two processes and explain in detail. EXAMPLE: I will make an appointment to have my hair done by calling the salon and setting a time on Saturday so that my hair will look professionally plastered in place for the big night. I will rent a limo by calling 12 months in advance and paying exceptionally high prices for this service so that my date and all of my friends will have the night of their life.
15
Calculate You must show your work on math calculations to get a point for a correct answer! To get both points, the set-up must be shown with labeled numbers! Dimensional analysis is the best way to ensure you have the correct set -up.
16
Other Hints for Success
Use temporal language if possible Example: During an earthquake plates slide past each other rapidly. If a chemical equation can be used to describe a process, then use it! Example: Describe the biological cycle that removes carbon from the atmosphere. Use the photosynthesis equation!
17
Other hints for success
Answer the question asked! For example Q1 asked students to identify ways to reduce use of electricity. Students missed the point because they answered about alternative energy (using solar). This is about shifting the source rather than decreasing use. Do not answer more than what is asked. If it asks for two reasons, then give two reasons not three! The reader can not award points for your third reason even if it is correct. How would we answer this correctly? Example: Turn off the lights when you are not in the room.
18
Attacking the Question
BOX - Identify, Explain, Describe or Discuss Underline- academic vocabulary Circle- one, two or three/ except
19
Attacking the Question
Example: Explain how atmospheric carbon is incorporated into two ocean sinks. Sink= academic vocabulary----sink holds carbon---for example plants fix and hold carbon in their tissues Compared to a source---source releases carbon---for example decomposers respire and release carbon
