Water Quality Indicators
2
Water Quality Tests pH – measures the acidity and alkalinity of a liquid Temperature: Measures how hot or cold a substance is Turbidity – measures water clarity and can be affected by the algal growth not allowing sunlight to move through or sediments in solution.
3
Water Quality Tests Dissolved Oxygen – tests the amount of oxygen in water (parts per million).. Bacteria/Chemical Analysis – These are tests to ensure that there is little to no bacteria and harmful chemicals found in the water. Bacteria like e.coli are very harmful to water systems (Walkerton Tragedy) Hard Water Test – Test to show the mineral content in the water.
4
Dissolved oxygen is decreased if there is high algal growth for it needs more carbon dioxide to grow. It also is low when oceans are absorbing more carbon dioxide. Low dissolved oxygen is called eutrophication High dissolved oxygen is called oligotrophication
5
Bioindicators Bioindicators are living organisms that are used to measure water quality. Most common in freshwater systems are macroinvertebrates (large invertebrates)
6
Bioindicators Caddisfly, Mayfly and Dragonfly survive in High Quality water Leeches, worms, and crayfish live in low quality water

Turbidity Test Out of the 2 liquids, which one is the most turbid and which is the least? How do you know that they are the most and least turbid?

Fill in the blank using the following words: Acidic, Low oxygen, High temperatures, basic, neutral, cold temperatures, normal oxygen levels. Bacteria often live in environments that are _High Temperature_____, ___Low Oxygen___________and _________Acidic____________for they can tolerate extreme environments. Many animals can survive in ___________Basic____________________pH of water for it doesn’t change the water chemistry drastically but all fish can survive in a ___Neutral___________________ pH and (which is ). In winter time, fish and insects go to the bottom of a lake where ______Cold Temperatures______________ and ___________Normal Oxygen Levels____________are present so they can survive in diapause without freezing.
