How to begin a poetic explication
S.P.O.T.The.T.O.A.D.S or Spot the Toads – a mnemonic device to help you attack poetry. Speaker: Who is talking? Persona? Purpose: Why? Why was this poem written? Occasion: When? What prompted it? Theme: What is the poet’s main idea? Tone: Author’s attitude toward subject?

Tools: How did poet do it? Imagery? What kind? Devices of sound? Rhythm? Rhyme? Meter? Irony? Mood? Metaphor? Figures of speech? Allusion? Mood? Organization: Appearance? Kind? Audience: Is this written for a specific group? Diction: Word Choice! Find specific words/phrases that show poet’s meaning. Style: Anything else. Style IS meaning.

QUIZ At the end of your “Close Read” answers from yesterday, draw a line and label it Poetry Quiz #2. Number from Do not skip lines. When you are finished with the quiz, start the analysis of today’s poems by yourself on your new piece of paper. Everything will be due and must be turned in by the end of class today.
