SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
2
SEDIMENTARY ROCKS Sedimentary rocks- formed from loose sediment
(the broken fragments of other rocks). These sediments are transported, deposited and eventually Compacted and cemented together. This is called lithification.
3
Types of Sed. Rx Clastic rocks are composed of fragments, or clasts, of pre-existing rock.
4
Types of Sed. Rx Bioclastic rocks
(also called organic) are composed of organic debris such as plants (lignite, coal) or shells (coquina, fossiliferous limestone).
5
Types of Sed. Rx Chemical rocks:
made up from rock fragments that are chemical in origin and formed from minerals that were once dissolved in water.
6
Are all Sed. Rocks distinguishable in only one of the groups (Clastic, Organic, Chemical)??
7
Sedimentary Rock Features
Stratification/Strata - is the building up of layers
8
Sedimentary Rock Features
Mud Cracks - cracks formed by the drying, of the mud
9
Sedimentary Rock Features
Ripple Marks - wavy feature formed by wind, wave, or current.
10
Sedimentary Rock Features
Fossils - Organic organisms fossilized/cemented into rock layer.
