2 WELCOME to the Medical Library
University of Jaffna • Medical library is one of the branch libraries of the University of Jaffna. • Established in 1978. • It mainly supports the undergraduate medical & Allied health sciences education and in its learning, teaching and research activities.

5 Contribute to accessibility of information.
What do we do? We provide support in locating information to Students, Lecturers, Researchers etc. Contribute to accessibility of information. Value added support – identification, organization, storing, retrieval and dissemination of information.

6 Library Membership All permanent staff members of the University of Jaffna. All registered students of this University (Undergraduate and Postgraduate) Any others should get the written permission to use the library for a short period of time. Readers are requested to fill the registration form to obtain the membership. Library membership doesn’t expire until graduation.

7 Degree certificate will be issued after you settle all dues in the library.
Loss of membership card should be reported immediately. You will be charged a fine for the replacement of membership card.

10 Library opening hours Monday - Friday 08.30am - 6.00 pm
Saturdays am – 2.00 pm Library is closed on all public holidays, Sundays and University special holidays.

12 General rules and regulations for the library users
No bags, files, umbrellas can be brought in to the library. Strict silence should be maintained inside the library. Group discussions are not permitted inside the library. Smoking, drinking and consumption of food are prohibited. Books should not be replaced on the shelves and need to be left on the table for re-shelving. Readers must present their University student identity cards for inspection, on the request of the library staff. Tearing of pages from any publication or any other or any type of vandalism is a punishable offence.

13 Disorderly conduct will render the reader liable to suspension from the library membership.
Please turn off ringer on your cell phone and set it on vibrate mode. Conduct cell phone conversations outside the library entrance

Periodicals (Currently subscribed 16 titles) Reference sources – Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Bibliographies. News papers. Past examination papers. Postgraduate thesis. Electronic sources – CD Roms and other database.

27 Organization of Library Resources
Reference Area Most of the important textbooks and permanent reference books. These books can be borrowed only for overnight use. Green Label (permanent reference) • Stack area Textbooks and books for additional reading are shelved in this section. Can be borrowed for a period of two weeks. • Periodical section About 20 titles Allied Health Science Titles Current issues are displayed. Back issues at the storage. Arrangement –alphabetical order of the periodical title. Issued only for photocopying .

Dewey Decimal Classification -22nd edition. Book are arranged on the shelves according to the classification number given on the spine label of each book.

Catalogue is a key to access the collection in a library. Two types. Computerized catalogue Search by – Author Title Class number Subject/ Key word Publisher

34 Loan of Books ONE (1) Reference Book – I day Reference books
TWO (2) Lending (Stack) books – 14 days Reference books Only for overnight use Can be borrowed after am Should be returned before 10.00am of the next working day Lending Books. (Stack area) Loan for two weeks A student can borrow one reference book(Except green label) and two lending books at a time.

37 Books on overdue, damaged or lost
Fine will be imposed Lending books - Rs 5.00/book/working day Reference books – Rs 10.00/book/day Damaged or lost materials: Should be replaced with the same edition or latest edition of the same book. Replacement cost or fine will be charged.

We request you to: register as library users, abide by the rules and keep student membership cards with you at all times adhere to the Code of Conduct and be co responsible for the conservation and maintenance of the collection and the facilities be computer literate develop your information literacy skills.
