2 ANCIENT GREECE - Sports
LSU’s Tiger Stadium is located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Tiger Stadium is where LSU plays football. The first Olympics were held in 776 BC to honor the Greek God Zeus. The Greeks liked grace and skill in their sports; they were very competitive. Thanks to them we now have the Olympics. Tiger Stadium at LSU

The image in this photo is a good example of modern highways & bridges. 53,000 roads connected Rome to other cities. These roads were used for many purposes such as mercantile and military. IH-35 and the Ben White Interchange

4 ANCIENT GREECE – Arts/Drama
The Performing Arts Center at Austin High School is where students perform various plays throughout the year. Theatre comes from a Greek word that means “a viewing place”. The ancient Greeks used hoists in order to represent flying, same as we do today. The PAC at AHS

5 Ancient Greece – Mathematics
One of the main shapes you see in this image is of a right triangle. Pythagoras is known by some as the creator of Greek Mathematics and the father of the Pythagorean Theorem. This picture shows vents from an X-Box which is used to extract heat during game play. X-Box

6 China – Government Money is the main source of currency throughout the world. Paper money in classical China was called “flying money” because it was so light and could fly out of someone’s hand. The “dollar” seen in this photo is the type of currency used in the United States. Money

7 China – Interactions/trades/military
Gun powder or “Rifle Powder” is used today primarily to expel ammunition out of a gun. China developed this powder by mixing sulfur, salt peter and charcoal. It was used in the 10th century for fireworks to scare off evil spirits, then, later was used for warfare. In modern society, gun powder can be found in most locations that sells firearms. Gunpowder

8 China – Architecture/engineering
Compasses are used around the world as a way of directing people who are traveling. Classical China compasses were made of loadstone and iron and the two materials would attract each other. The image shows a depiction of an ancient Chinese compass. The spoon, known as a “south-pointer”, would be made of load stone and it would be placed on a bronze plate known as the “heaven plate” . 9 China – Architecture/engineering
Today, coal is primarily used to create electricity in coal burning power plants. In classical China, coal or “black earth” was used as a fuel. It was also used to melt iron for iron goods. This is a picture of charcoal that is used in a barbeque pit to cook food. Charcoal is an artificial form of coal created by partially burned organic matter. Charcoal

10 Golden Age of Islam – Interactions/trades/military
Today, banking is used commonly throughout the world as the primary means of accepting, saving and loaning money. The system of banking was developed during the Golden Age of Islam. After using coins, the Abbasids used a central bank with multiple branches in order to bank over great distances. This is a sign at the Chase bank on the corner of Mopac and William Cannon. 11 Golden Age of Islam – Entertainment
Chess is a very old game of strategy played throughout the world. It was introduced to Muslims by the Persians and was then enjoyed by men and women mostly because it was challenging. A chess board and its pieces come in many different shapes and sizes. The game seen in this photo is based on the movie Transformers. Chess Set

12 Golden Age of Islam – Health
Hospitals were one of the Golden Age of Islam’s greatest achievements. Early hospitals were founded in Damascus and were primarily secular. This is St. David’s South Austin Medical Center located off of Ben White. Today, hospitals are used to make people feel better. St. David’s Hospital

13 Golden Age of Islam – Mathematics
Math books such as this one used to be the primary tool used by teachers and students to learn mathematics. Algebra comes from the Muslims. The word “Algebra” is derived from the Arabic phrase “Al Jabr” which means “the bringing together of separate shapes. This Algebra book is merely used now as a reference guide in Mr. Trenfield’s class. Algebra 2 Book
