Ecozones….

ECOZONE Definition Ecozone: Region based on its ecological characteristics. Landforms, climate, soils and natural vegetation Ecology: The science of the relationship between organisms and their environment An ecozone is a large geographical area in which human activities interact with the natural world. It is a much bigger bioregion. For example, in the Fort Frances area there are woodlot and wetland bioregions, but is also part of the much bigger Boreal Shield ecozone.

Ecozones more information…
First developed in 1986 15 land-based (terrestrial) ecozones 5 water based (marine) ecozones Ecozones help geographers identify environmental issues and develop solutions

Ecozones…a few more points
Ecozone boundaries A boundary is a line that divides one area from another. Boundaries between ecozones are not exact because physical and human characteristics can be shared by neighbouring ecozones For example: the landform The Canadian Shield is large and is covered by four ecozones.

Transition Zones Transition Zone: An areas in which the characteristics of one ecozone gradually blend into the next Parts of both neighbouring ecozones are found in the transition zone and eventually fade out

The Canadian Saucer Mostly in Ontario, but includes parts of Manitoba and Quebec Soggy region: There is a flat region near sea level Permafrost below the surface prevents water from filtering through the soil, causing it to pool Low population Ocean Harbour – ships wheat from farms overseas Railways to the south bring goods and people
