How do Search engines work?
Home When you are searching the web you are not going to find every single web page in the world just your search engines index. The search engines use crawlers to scan the pages of possible sites. You can think of the crawlers as spiders they go out and go to sites then sites that point to other sites and choose the best results. But how do they choose the best results? The crawlers scan the sites and ask themselves how many times the words of your search are mentioned? Are the words in the title? Where are the words in the text? Choosing the best sites they look at the rating of the site and decide on the best few.

How Do you use Search Engines?
Home When we search on the web we don’t need to type in the whole of our question we type the key words. If we type in our whole question including words like ‘the’ ‘and’ ‘of’ ‘it’ ‘a’ etc. The web crawls will ignore it so it’s just a waste of time. If we type in our search, ‘what is Capital of Australia?’ we will get pages with the words ‘what’ ‘is’ and ‘of’. All you need too put is ‘capital Australia’ You don’t even need the punctuation. Also when we use punctuation in our search it comes up with websites that have punctuation in them.

Domain Names Home When you are looking for a trustworthy website one that says ‘.gov’ is often the official site. Also it has been checked by the Government so it will always be safe. .gov Government .net Network .com Company /kids For Kids .edu education .ac.uk academic .org organisation .co.uk British company .mil military Often when you are searching an advertisement will come up first because the company owning the advert may have paid to be put at the top of the page.

Spoofs and hoaxes Home Some websites aren’t always reliable, they can be hoaxes and make you think they are true when they really aren’t. Even if the website is valid it still isn’t defiantly true it can just be a joke that someone thinks is funny. Do you think this is real? Click and see. As well as hoax websites you can also get websites that are just other peoples opinion. They are bias websites and try to persuade you to think what they think. It’s always best to try different websites as well.
