The Spinning Jenny was invented in 1770 by James Hargreaves.
It was a hand-powered multiple spinning machine. This machine made it possible to spin more than one thread at a time, and made weaving easier for workers. Click here to return to main menu

The Steam Powered Engine was invented in the 1780s by Robert Fulton.
Steam Engine The Steam Powered Engine was invented in the 1780s by Robert Fulton. It was used to power steamboats and, eventually, the railroads. In 1793, Eli Whitney invented the Cotton Gin.
At the time it was invented no one realized its importance, but it became revolutionary. This machine was used to get the seeds out of cotton, instead of being done by hand which caused production (and slavery) to increase. Click here to return to main menu

Samuel F.B. Morse developed the Telegraph in the 1840s.
This machine could transmit messages through electric wires. By the 1860s, an undersea cable was being used to transmit messages between North America and Europe. Click here to return to main menu

Steel In 1856, Henry Bessemer developed the process to purify iron ore. This new substance was called steel, and was more durable and lighter than iron. It became a widely used material in tools, bridges, and railroads. Click here to return to main menu

Dynamite Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist, invented Dynamite in 1866.

Light bulb In the 1870s, Thomas Edison created the first practical electric light bulb. His “incandescent lamp” lit up whole cities. This invention increased production because factories were able to stay open after dark. Click here to return to main menu

Telephone In the 1870s, Alexander Graham Bell, perfected the design of the telephone. It allowed speech to be transmitted electronically. It revolutionized how people communicated, and made it easier to pass on more than one message. Click here to return to main menu
