Findings: 10 minutes Key Features of African Masks

3 Learning Objectives You will: What I’m looking for…

What I’m looking for… You understand what the key characteristics of African masks are in order to inform the planning and designing of your own work. You have an ability to generate different design ideas that are influenced by African masks. 4 Before we can make a mask, what do we need to do first?*
5 minutes Before we can make a mask, what do we need to do first?* Create some initial design ideas. Why is it important to produce at least 3 design ideas?* It provides an opportunity to consider a variety of possible solutions. What comes after the initial design ideas?* A final design which can combine the best parts of the initial ideas to make the strongest possible outcome. 4

5 Initial Idea 1 Initial Idea 2 Initial Idea 3
On the next 3 right hand sketchbook pages you need to: Draw a rectangle, 8 x 14cm in the centre 30 minutes Initial Idea 1 2. Then, thinking about the discussion we have just had and looking back at the research, draw 3 different mask designs in pencil line. 3. Afterwards, add colour with tone to each design Initial Idea 2 Initial Idea 3 5

6 EXAMPLES Think how you can use varied pressure with the pencil crayon to add tone and a sense of 3D. 6

7 Put titles ‘initial or mask design 1/2/3 etc’
PREP.WORK PREP.WORK WK4 Ensure that all 3 of your initial designs are completed in full colour and with tone. Put titles ‘initial or mask design 1/2/3 etc’

8 5 minutes Turn to the back of your sketchbook, look at the learning objectives from the start of the lesson, tick each statement to indicate how confident you feel you have met each one (fully, partially, not at all). Learning Objectives You will: Learn to identify the key features of African Masks. Learn to design masks using the inspiration and influence gained from looking at African masks.
