1 Calculating percentages mentally
We can use percentages that we know to find other percentages. Suggest ways to work out: 15% 20% 30% 60% 1% 10% 75% 100% Discuss how the percentages on the board could be calculated mentally. For example, to find 20%, find 10% and double the answer or find 1/5 by dividing by 5. To find 17.5% we can find 10%, half that answer to find 5% and half that answer to find 2.5%. Adding these together give 17.5%. Mention that this is the percentage used to find VAT. For example, to work out 17.5% of £42: 10% of £48 is £4.80, 5% of £48 is £2.40, 2.5% of £48 is £1.20, 17.5% of £48 is £ £ £1.20 = £8.40. 35% 15% 5 %
