New lands used as economic resources to be plundered (natural resources, valuable art, factories etc.) By 1941 Nazi leaders had planned the “Final Solution” Hitler set up “puppet” gov’ts in W. Europe E. Europe slavs pushed aside (inferior)

Genocide of Jews, Slavs, Gypsies, mentally ill
Built death camps in E. Europe (Poland – Auschwitz, Sobibor) Took clothes, valuables, shaved heads, separated families, women & children Young & sick targeted first and w/in a few days sent to the “shower” rooms Used for medical experiments & hard labor Over 6 million Jews were murdered

Big Three met in 1942 & agreed to finish war in Europe before Asia Distrusted each other Total war continues, factories transformed again, rationing continued Helped to end the Great Depression Women come to the rescue – AGAIN – factories, driving trucks, ambulances

III. Turning Points El Alamein – British stop Rommel for 1st time & eventually trapped him w/ help from US in 1943 Allies used N. Africa as staging ground & invaded Italy Italy defeated in a month & Mussolinis is overthrown

IV. The Red Army Hitler launched a new offensive campaign but was stalled Stalingrad Costliest of the war, street by street fighting Ger. finally surrendered (300,000 men) & Red Army goes on the offensive

V. Invasion of France 1944 Allies ready to open a 2nd front in France
