DO NOW: Have you ever had heartburn. Describe what it feels like
DO NOW: Have you ever had heartburn? Describe what it feels like. What do you think causes it?
2
Day 10 Aim: What do we mean by acid and bases; and how is the strength of acids and bases measured?
3
1) What are Acids and Bases?
Scientifically speaking, acids are substances that release a hydrogen ion into water. While bases are substances that release OH into water. Don’t write!!
4
What are Acids and Bases?
What you need to know is that: Acids and bases come in different strengths The strength of an acid or base is measured on something called an pH scale. The strength of an acid or base can affect other molecules (such as proteins) particularly enzymes
5
2) Characteristics of Acids and Bases
Acids tend to taste sour and react with metals Bases tend to taste bitter and feel soapy
6
3) What is the pH scale? The pH scale is used to see how acidy something is. The scale ranges from 1 to 14. The closer to 1 something is, the more acidy it is. The more closer to 14 something is, the least acid (or basic) it is. Something with the pH of 7 is said to be neutral. Plain water has a ph of 7.
7
4) What happens when acids and bases come into contact with each other?
They react and neutralize (cancel) each other. ACID + BASE WATER + SALT For this reason, acids and bases are considered “opposites.” Therefore, if a solution is too acidic what can we add to neutralize it? A base!

5) So why is pH important to biology?
pH will effect the shape of protein molecules. So if a protein’s shape is changed, can it do its job? Each type of protein has its own pH where it works the best. This is called its Optimum pH.
10
What does optimum look like on a graph?
The graph resembles a hill. The optimum is the highest point.
