80s: The Beginning of the Computer Age
The first computer (or PC) was the IBM PC invented in These devices were first popular in the office and then came into the home. Microchips were later introduced, making the PC’s CPU smaller and making the device more affordable . In the 1980s, a man named Tim Berners invented a program for the PC called “bulletin boards”. It was later re-named to what we now know as the “internet”. PINK: computers ADD TEXT FOR THIS SLIDE TONIGHT!!! Achievements in Space in the 1980s
Space probes were sent out into space to take pictures of planets of other celestial objects in space. The Voyager 2 probe in 1980 captured picture of Saturn and in 1986 it flew by Uranus revealing that it had 2 more rings and 10 more moons than scientists originally thought. The first reusable spacecraft was launched on April 12, The space shuttle, Columbia, lifted from Kennedy Space center at 7 a.m. EST. The goal of this mission was to make it safely into Earth’s orbit and to return home safely. Luckily, their mission was a success and some items such as space-food, such as tea, was returned from the mission. Now, NASA could reuse this space shuttle instead of having to make a new one every time they want to complete a mission in space. BLUE CIRCLE: Space shuttle & ORANGE CIRCLE: more space

Video Games in the 80s Video games were extremely popular throughout the 1980s. People could either go to arcades to play these games or some were created to be played on the PC. Game consoles were also a way that people could play their beloved video games. The Atari 2600 was the first successful game console created in 1977, but it paved the way for video games consoles released in the 1980s. GREEN: video games (basics consoles and popular games)

Donkey Kong, introduced by Nintendo in 1981, started making the company more popular. In this game, the main character, a plumber named Jumpman (later renamed Mario), must climb up a construction site to save the princess from Donkey Kong as he throws barrels down at Jumpman. Popular games (continued from previous slide) Super Mario Bros., released by Nintendo, is one of the best selling games of all time. Hole In the Ozone Layer Discovered
In 1985, the scientists at the British Antarctic Survey discovered a hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica. They believe that it was carbon dioxide emissions in the air that weakened the ozone layer eventually causing this hole. Later, 53 countries around the world signed the Montreal Cords and agreed to stop using these harmful chemicals by the year 2000. ORANGE: hole in ozone layer The ozone layer’s job is to reflect the harmful ultraviolet waves that the sun produces, and without that protection, the ultraviolet waves can enter the atmosphere making the Earth slowly become warmer.

CDs, CD-ROMs and Other Forms of Electrical Entertainment
In the year 1980, Philips came out with the CD (compact disc). But most record collectors dismissed the CD, like the 8-track, but by the year 1981, they were starting to become more popular because they were more convenient than the previous cassette tapes or vinyl before them.
