Adolescence Endocrine system Reproductive System
2
The endocrine system Functions
Regulates long-term changes such as growth and development Produce chemicals that control many of the body’s daily activities Chemicals are called hormones Hormones can turn on, turn off, speed up, slow down the activities of different organs and tissues
3
The endocrine system Endocrine glands– produce and release chemical products directly into the bloodstream Pituitary gland– located in the brain and regulates growth from infancy and adulthood Ovaries– release hormones that regulate egg development in females Testes– release hormone (testosterone) that regulates the production of sperm
4
Growth and development
Infancy- First two years of life Cries for help Learns to sit, crawl, stand and walk Plays alongside others Learns many words Learn to feed themselves Understand simple directions
5
Growth and development childhood– ages 3-12
Physical Changes Become more coordinated Has many interests and hobbies Permanent teeth Appetite increases Mental Changes Curiosity grows Language and conversation skills develop Learn to read and solve problems Learn higher level thinking skills Has many interests and hobbies Develop values Take on more responsibilities Social Changes Plays with others Becomes less self- centered Learn to make friends and care about others Need to fit in becomes important Learn to work in groups
6
Growth and development
Adolescence– stage of development during which children become adults physically and mentally Typically between the ages of 9-15 Puberty– period of sexual development in which the body becomes able to reproduce
7
Growth and development
Adulthood Unsure when adolescence ends and adulthood begins Aging– after about the age of 30, skin wrinkles, muscle strength begins to decrease women stop menstruating/ovulating
8
Adolescence Oily Skin/Acne Body Odor/More Perspiration Growth Spurt
Changes for Both Oily Skin/Acne Body Odor/More Perspiration Growth Spurt Hair growth– underarms, legs, pubic area Start to care more about what others think. Interest in opposite gender Think like an adult Spend more time with friends Consider Consequences of your actions

Adolescence Breast development Grow taller and shoulders broaden
Changes in girls Breast development Hair growth under arms, legs and pubic area Hips get wider Menstruation Begins Ovulation Begins Puberty usually starts earlier Changes in boys Grow taller and shoulders broaden Gain more weight/muscles get bigger Hair growth under arms, legs and in pubic area Voice deepens Facial Hair Puberty usually starts later Sperm Production Begins
10
Changes during Puberty
Male Female Both Grow taller and shoulders broaden Gain more weight/muscles get bigger Chest Hair Voice deepens Facial Hair Puberty usually starts later Sperm Production Begins Produce Testosterone Oily Skin/Acne Body Odor/More Perspiration Mood swings Growth Spurt Hair growth- under arms, legs, pubic Start to care more about what others think. Interest in opposite gender Think like an adult Spend more time with friends Consider Consequences of your actions Breast development Hips get wider Menstruation Begins Puberty usually starts earlier Eggs mature Body fat increases Produce estrogen and progesterone Changes during Puberty
11
Male and Female Reproductive Systems
12
Female Reproductive System
Function To produce eggs and, if an egg is fertilized, to nourish a developing baby until birth Organs involved are the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus and vagina.
13
Female Reproductive System
Fallopian Tubes Ovary Uterus Endometrium Cervix Vagina
14
Female Reproductive System
Fallopian Tubes Ovary Uterus Urinary Bladder Cervix Urethra Vagina Rectum
15
Endometrium
16
Female organs Ovaries- are the female reproductive structure that produces eggs Egg (ova)- female sex cells Fallopian tubes- passageways for eggs as they travel from the ovary to the uterus. Uterus- a hollow muscular organ about the size of a pear.
17
Female organs Endometrium- soft layer of tissue and blood cells that nourishes a fertilized egg Cervix- an opening at the base of the uterus Vagina- a muscular passageway leading from the uterus to the outside of the body
18
Menstrual Cycle Process during which an egg matures, is released, and the uterus prepares to receive it Each menstrual cycle lasts approximately 28 days A menstrual period lasts for 3 to 5 days
20
Male Reproductive System
Function To produce sperm and the hormone testosterone The male reproductive system includes the testes, scrotum and penis
21
Male Reproductive System
Rectum Urinary bladder Vas Deferens Urethra Penis Epididymis Testes Cowpers Gland Scrotum
22
Male Reproductive System
Urinary bladder Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicles Prostate Gland Urethra Cowpers Gland Penis Epididymis Testes
23
Rectum Cowpers Gland Cowpers Gland
24
Male Organs Testes- organs where testosterone and sperm are produced Sperm– male sex cell Scrotum- sac of skin that holds the testes just under the penis Penis- external male sex organ also used to urinate. Semen- the mixture of sperm cells and fluid
25
Male organs Seminal vesicle- two glands that secrete seminal fluid Prostate gland- it forms a fluid that combines with sperm and a fluid from the seminal vesicle to make semen Vas Deferens- tubes in which sperm and other fluids are combined to make semen Urethra- a tube that at different times carries urine and semen out of the body
