Spanish Officials took new measures…
Stronger frontier defenses

Gave gifts to form bonds with Natives
Spanish paid other native groups to attack the Apaches (there had always been tension between different groups of natives)

Did not eliminate raids on colonies but DID reduce the number of them
As colonies becomes safer…. More people want to join.
By Hispanic population grows in New Mexico

8. California 1760 Spanish colonized California Extends their buffer zone
Also had trouble populating California

Mexico becomes independent from Spain in American Expansionists wanted The US to go WEST! Manifest Destiny- the belief that God wanted the United States to own all of North America

11. Trade Opens US to Northern Mexico for trading
Santa Fe Trail- Missouri to Santa Fe (opened the plains for trading)
1820s- North Easterners sail around South America to trade in California.
California becomes dependent on American Merchants

13. Other trails California Trail- created by Mountain Men
Oregon Trail- started by the Whitmans who founded a Indian Mission.
There were many hardships faced while traveling or settling in the West.

18. If it was so bad… why did people do it?
Most who made it gained bigger and better farms in Oregon or California Treaty Protection from Natives: - Treaty of Fort Laramie- kept Indians away from the major trails …but Indians were mobile… so contact was evitable.
