2. On a sunny August morning, nine scared kids changed the world by doing what any of us would consider a normal task – walking through the door at school on the first day of fall term.

3. My father and eight other kids from his neighborhood walked to school that day in a state of worry none of them could ever forget.
“We knew there’d be trouble,” he always told me, “but we knew that we could not turn back. We had to face that crowd with our heads held high and quietly wait for the moment of truth.”

4. That day, he held tight to his books and his friends and his fear
That day, he held tight to his books and his friends and his fear. He walked through the congested confusion that gathered in front of the school escorted by armed National Guardsmen.
He listened to hateful words flung at him from the ignorant and angry students he’d be attending classes with.
