1
What is Matter made of? Atoms – the basic particle of which all matter, EVERYTHING, is made * A sheet of paper is approximately 10,000 atoms thick
2
Elements Simplest of substances made of only one kind of atom
Cannot be broken down in anything else Represented by one or two letter symbols Identified by Physical and Chemical Properties
3
Molecule – a group of Two or more Atoms held together by a chemical bond.
*Chemical bond – the force of attraction between two atoms Two of the same atoms Different atoms, Oxygen & Hydrogen
4
Compound – a substance made of Two or more Elements
held together by a chemical bond atom atom A compound made up of 2 different elements A compound made up of 7 different elements
5
A compound can be broken down into elements
An element An element A compound made up of 3 different elements An element
6
Difference between Molecules & Compounds
Molecules are two or more atoms. These atoms can be of the same element or not. Example: Oxygen Gas (O2) or Water (H2O) Compounds are two or more different Elements. Example: Water (H2O) Sodium Chloride (NaCl)
7
Chemical Formula: Element Symbols and Ratio (# of atoms)
C6H12O or (H20)
8
Draw a line between the molecule and its name.
Hydrogen chloride HCl Chlorine Cl2 Carbon dioxide CO2 Methane CH4
9
Water Coal Carbon dioxide Oxygen Gas Chalk Wax Table salt Helium
Type of Matter: Made up of: Element or Compound (one is neither) Water Hydrogen and Oxygen Coal Carbon Carbon dioxide Carbon and Oxygen Oxygen Gas Oxygen + Oxygen Chalk Calcium, Carbon & Oxygen Wax Carbon & Hydrogen Table salt Sodium & Chlorine Helium
10
Mixtures – When one or more substances are together and not chemically bonded
Heterogeneous – When you can see all the substances in the mixture Ex: Salad and Cereal Homogeneous – When you can NOT see all the substances Ex: Air and Soy Sauce
