I chose this song because I think it fits the theme of Jake attempting to remodel himself to attract Didi but in the end he can’t hide his past. The beginning of the song mentions “Building up from the bottom, right to the top. Packing my bags.” This reminds me of Jake, who started off as a unpopular intellectual and tried to move to a new town with a new image. The line “I get a little bit bigger but then I admit, I’m just the same as I was.” Fits Jake trying to be the big man but still keeping his old tendencies that people call him out for. (Such as not getting rid of mathlete stuff.)

I think this song reminds me of the relationship between Jake and Didi. They are both going out and dating behind Todd's back but they won’t go public and Didi views it as a game. Jake wants Didi to take it seriously but Didi is worried about her popularity. Jake keeps trying to explain himself but few people besides Rick listen to him. Didi is just using both Jake and Todd as an end to fulfill her wishes without much care of consequences for the people around her.

This song reminds me of the end of the book. When Rick, Jake, and Dipsy realize that most of the people in Fritz are just selfish and care mostly about themselves and their image (EX: Todd, Didi, Jennifer to an extent, before she apologizes.) At the end of the book they learn to cope with this and decide to stop trying to fit in with people they don’t agree with. Except for Jake who is still obsessed with Didi. But he is exiled and not allowed back.

This song represents Jakes rise and fall in popularity. While not a literal interpretation it still sums up the rise of a man who was doomed by overconfidence and a lack of truth. Jake gained a lot of popularity by his parties, but he didn’t socialize or really know anyone at the parties. So in the end he had no almost new real friends, just a few people who wanted free beer and music. So when Jake had to prove himself to Todd and the others he only had Rick to support him which wasn’t enough.

I think this song represents how Jake is rushing to achieve popularity for a futile goal (Didi). The lyric “You're stuck in the middle of all irrelevance” (start) is similar to how Jake was unpopular in his old school and unable to get Didi’s attention. The lyric ‘You gotta get out of the middle, and rise to the top now” (Start of the song). Is like Jake's mission to reinvent himself as a popular party man in an attempt to win Didi. When the song says “Cause i’m playin it all wrong” reminds me of how Jake doesn't realize he can’t keep the ruse forever. The “ease it off” (entire song) part reminds me how Jake ignores all warnings in his pursuit of Didi. Even when Jake warns him that his parties are trouble, he refuses to listen due to fear of losing his image. But the most important part I feel is when the song says “Why can’t you let go? Like a bird in a snow this is no place to build your home” (2:14). It represents how Jake has moved into a neighborhood he doesn't belong too, and taken a image that doesn't suit him just to impress ONE selfish girl that he can’t let go of.
