1 BELL WORK: Answer only In 1887 a strange nerve disease attacked the people in the Dutch East Indies. The disease was beriberi. Symptoms of the disease included weakness and loss of appetite, victims often died of heart failure. Scientists thought the disease might be caused by bacteria people got from chickens. They injected chickens with bacteria from the blood of patients with beriberi. The injected chickens became sick. However, so did a group of chickens that were not injected with bacteria. What is the problem? What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable? What could be a hypothesis? What is the control group? Is the disease Beriberi caused by bacteria from chickens? Bacteria How many chickens got sick If bacteria from patients with the disease is injected into chickens, then all the chickens will get sick.

2 Paper Towel:

3 Learning Targets: Today’s Class
I can explain and describe what forces (balanced and unbalanced) are. I can explain that unbalanced forces create motion. Today’s Class I can explain and describe how to calculate speed, distance, and time of an object. I can use the magic triangle to manipulate the variables of a given equation. I can calculate the speed, distance, or time of any object.

4 BALANCED AND UNBALANCED FORCES:

5 FORCES: Turn the person next to you:
What did you learn from the video? How can balanced and unbalanced forces be used? Nail activity Architecture – Building design Sports – Baseball, Football, Basketball, etc. Don’t forget when something moves it is because of unbalanced forces.

6 MOTION: How do we describe motion? How far How fast How long Distance
Speed Time

7 Calculating Speed: S = d/t
Speed (S) = distance traveled (d) ÷ the amount of time it took (t). S = d/t

8 Manipulating the Speed Formula:
What if you wanted to find out speed (HOW FAST)? D Since D is above the T, we know we have to divide OR S T D S= T

9 Manipulating the Speed Formula:
What if you wanted to find out the distance (HOW FAR)? D Since S is next to the T, we know we have to multiply OR S T D= S X T

10 Manipulating the Speed Formula:
What if you wanted to find out the time (HOW LONG)? D HOW LONG – does not mean how far… DO NOT FORGET! Since D is above the S, we know we have to divide OR S T D T= S
