An introduction to life as a a Sixth Former

5 Routine Weekly routine: Briefing in common room each day at 840am One House assembly Two House time meetings/ tutorial meetings Key Stage 3 support One lunch duty per week

6 House system Sixth Form students take a leading role within the House community Role models for the younger students Take a role leading House Competitions Supporting KS3/4 Mentoring

7 Mentoring Programme Opportunity for boys to work and assist teachers throughout the school. Use one prep lesson per week. ‘Opt In’ programme. Boys who maybe thinking of vocational careers. Useful for personal statement for University. Work in a subject studying at present or taken at GCSE. Give back to the DLS community.

10 A-level Year 12 external exams: independent AS qualification
AS grades (A – U), must go on Post-18 applications as there are a certificated qualification. End of Year 13: external examinations on all content covered in Year 12 and 13, and examined at an A-level standard

11 AS and A-level: across the 2 years
Year 12: M1 + M2  study these AS modules in lessons  complete AS external examination Year 13: M1 + M2  revise these modules independently  complete A-Level external examination M3 + M4  study these modules in lessons  complete A-level external examination

12 AS and A-level: Sciences and Maths
Year 12: M1 + M2 +M3  study these AS modules in lessons  complete AS external examination Year 13: M1 + M2 +M3  revise these modules independently  complete A-Level external examination M4 + M5 +M6  study these modules in lessons  complete A-level external examination

13 The importance of this is so that you are aware of the amount of work that needs to be completed.
Teachers will not have time to reteach work completed in Y12. Independent study is vital.

14 BTEC Level 3 education IT = Certificate (equivalent of 1 A-level)
Business = Diploma (equivalent of 2 A-levels) Applied Science = Diploma (equivalent of 2 A-levels) Sport= Extended Diploma (equivalent of 3 A-levels) Written assignments and a synoptic exam Formally assessed from the start of Year 12

19 Supervised Study 4 – 10 supervised studies; 1 – 2 non-contact time
Overseen by a teacher For Homework and Independent Study Student responsible to bring work Access to other classrooms: Art, Design & Technology and Photography available, but must REGISTER Own electronic devices welcome Music acceptable, but not encouraged 3 optional after school supervised study sessions (3:30-5pm)

20 Personal Tutor One supervised study period will include a one to one with your personal tutor You will meet once a week to discuss your progress You tutor will offer support if there is anything you are concerned about Tutorials will include discussion of classwork, attendance, punctuality, organisation, homework, independent study and extra curricular activities.

21 Consortium Your son is a College Ambassador
Vic and JCG: Sign-in at consortium colleges’ receptions Daily timetable: lessons overlap (discuss with subject teachers) Mock examination weeks run at different times Reporting: all fed back via DLS report Organisational skills and a pro-active attitude are essential

22 Post-18 Paths: University and Further Education
Support with UCAS (university applications) On-island: Highlands University Law Society Jersey International Business School Universities tour in activities week Opportunities for work and voluntary experience in year 13 to strength application

23 Post-18 Paths: Careers Apprenticeship Application after results
Qualified Profession Support with personal statements and employability skills Support from a range of employers and agencies Work experience and volunteering opportunities in specific fields or across several in year 13

24 Leadership Team Head Boys Deputy Head Boys Prefects Responsibilities
Application Process begins after October Half Term

25 Absence Your son’s attendance is tracked and sanctioned as necessary
