Lesson Starter What are the 3 main food groups? Give an example from each group. Energy is released from food by the process of respiration; write down the equation for respiration Give 3 examples of how we use energy in our bodies
2
Learning Intention To be able to give examples of specialised cells in the blood To describe the function of our blood To be able to identify the heart and lungs
3
What are cells? The basic unit of life Unicellular (amoeba)
Multicellular (us) - Specialised cells
4
Specialised cells in Blood
Think, Pair, Share.. How would you describe blood? Liquid Red Runny
5
Specialised cells in Blood
Plasma: YELLOW liquid, holds cells, 55% of total RBC- biconcave, 120 days WBC- shape shifters, fight infection Platelets- Blood clots
6
What is the purpose of blood?
Carries digested food around the body -Carbohydrates Glucose -Proteins Amino Acids -Fats Fatty Acids and Glycerol How does the blood get around your body?
7
How does the blood get around the body?
Pumped round – HEART Digested food delivered Questions.. How big is the heart (roughly)? What is the only function of the heart? Roughly how many times does the heart beat each day? What happens to the blood in the lungs? What makes the sound of the heart beat?
8
The Blood Carries digested food Carries oxygen (RBC)
Why is it important that oxygen gets round the body? (what process uses it?) How do we get oxygen in our body?
9
The Lungs Breathe in and out- feel What happens as you breathe in/out?
Oxygen in, picked up by RBC, transported round the body Respiration – products breathed out
