Cellular Process Notes
2
Standard 7-2.4 Explain how cellular processes (including respiration, photosynthesis in plants, mitosis, and waste elimination) are essential to the survival of the organism.
3
You should know... Cellular processes must happen in order for a cell to continue surviving. Cellular processes ensure the survival of the whole or entire organism.
4
Essential Cellular Processes
Photosynthesis Plants use light energy (like sunlight) to combine carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) to make simple sugars (C6H12O6), which are then stored in the vacuole or used. Plants release oxygen gas (O2). Occurs in the chloroplast.
5
Cellular Processes Continued
Respiration All plants and animals break down simple sugars (C6H12O6) into carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) and release energy, which is used to build, repair, and reproduce cells. Occurs in the mitochondria of cells.
6
Cellular Processes Continued
Waste Elimination Rid the cell of products that could be harmful to it Waste moves from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration (diffusion)
7
Cellular Processes Continued
Mitosis Mitosis is cell reproduction. Occurs in the nucleus of a cell Allows the cell to make an exact copy of itself Produces two daughter cells from one parent cell The daughter cells are identical to one another and the original parent cell Is needed for growth, replacement, and asexual reproduction.
