5. Biosafety Hazards Biosafety Level I Biosafety Level II
Ordinarily do not cause disease in humans. May include soaps, cleaners, species specific disease, vaccines.
Biosafety Level II
Have the potential to cause human disease if handled incorrectly. Precautions are taken to avoid problems. Protective equipment is used, Sharps containers are provided, disposal is outlined.
Biosafety Level III
Can cause serious or potentially lethal disease. Potential for respiratory transmission is high (tuberculosis). Requirements include controlled access, decontamination of waste and equipment, testing of personnel, protective equipment.
Biosafety Level IV
Pose high risk of causing life-threatening disease. Full body suits with air regulators are required. Must undergo extensive training to ensure safety.
