What is Repentance? One of (if not the most) difficult of God’s commands to obey. A condition of salvation from sin (Lk. 24:46; Acts 17:30). Something we must do (Acts 11:18; 2 Pet. 2:4).

What is Repentance? 2 Corinthians 7:8-11

Repentance is NOT… A promise to quit sinning (Lk. 3:7-9; Mt. 3:8)
The quitting of one particular sin (Ps. 119:1-8) The hiding of sin (Prov. 28:13; Num. 32:23; Acts 3:11-19) Feeling sorrow for sin (2 Cor. 7:10; Mt. 19: ; 27:3-5) Saying, “I have sinned” (Acts 2:37-38)

Repentance is… Strong’s Definition: Compunction (for guilt, including reformation); by implication reversal (of decision). Thayer’s Definition: A change of mind, as it appears to one who repents, of a purpose he has formed or of something he has done.

Repentance is… As taught in the Bible: The turning of the human will toward service unto God, with an utter hatred of sin. This accounts for the difficulty so many have with this command (Cf. Mt. 21:28-32). Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." 1 Peter 5:5 (NKJV)

Repentance: How It Is Produced
2 Corinthians 7:8-11 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? Romans 2:4 (NKJV) Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead." Acts 17:30-31 (NKJV)

Repentance: Its Results
For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter. 2 Cor 7:11 (NKJV)
