Business English October 24, Turn in your homework from this weekend (Workbook pp. 7-12) Bellringer: Edit the passage on the worksheet at your desk for capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar. Use the correct editing marks seen on the poster next to this screen. Be sure to put your name at the top of the page and turn it in when you are finished. You have 10 minutes from the start of class to finish. If you owe me work from last week, turn it in now. Be sure to staple the form stating the assignment was not turned in on time to the assignment when you turn it in. I WILL NOT ASK FOR THESE ASSIGNMENTS. If they’re not turned in, they will be recorded as a 0 in the gradebook.

Objectives Students will continue to work on punctuation skills in preparation for rewriting their business letters and guest speaker essays.

Commas Commas to Set Off Contrasted Elements & Appositives What is an appositive? An appositive is a noun or noun phrase that renames another noun right beside it. The appositive can be a short or long combination of words. Look at these appositive examples, all of which rename insect: The insect, a cockroach, is crawling across the kitchen table.

Commas Commas to Set Off Contrasted Elements & Appositives Contrasted elements usually begin with not, but not, though, or unlike and should be set off with commas. An appositive is a word or phrase that identifies or renames the noun or pronoun that comes before it. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes, one of the world’s best-known detectives. Practice Dr. Watson Holmes’s sidekick and friend helped solve cases.

Commas Commas With Non-Restrictive Phrases or Clauses A non-restrictive phrase or clause adds information that is not necessary to the basic meaning of the sentence, so it is set off with commas. If the sentence has the same meaning with or without it, the clause or phrase is non-restrictive. The land area of the Marshall Islands, which covers only about 70 square miles, is scattered over 780,000 square miles. Practice The nationality that makes up most of the country’s population is Micronesia.

Commas Other Uses of Commas Use commas to set off items in a date, items in an address, dialogue, nouns of direct address, and interjections; also interruptions, numerals in large numbers, enclosing titles or initials, and to clarify or add emphasis. Drat, Bill forgot to get my English assignment from Mr. Taylor. The plane plunged from 18,000 feet to 16,000 feet in less than five seconds. Practice “I reminded you Bill to get my assignment,” I spouted. What happened happened without warning.

Where does the comma go? Daniel Garrison a farmer wakes up very early. 2. Tanner my teacher is wearing a gray shirt. 3. “If I don’t wake up in time” he whispered “I will be in trouble.” 4. “Today will be rainy” the weatherman said with a frown. 5. I will be sixteen on Tuesday the 6th of July 1582. 6. September is a date that will be remembered.
