Types of bones ASSISTANT LECTURER FARAH E. ISMAEEL 1/2/2018
3
Characteristics of Bone
bone is a special form of connective tissue consists of cells, fibers, and extracellular matrix. Because of mineral deposition in the matrix, bones become calcified. produce hard structure for protecting various organs ASSISTANT LECTURER FARAH E. ISMAEEL 1/2/2018
4
Bone Matrix Highly vascularized to aid diffusion in calcified matrix•
Organic components of bone resist tension whereas mineral components resist compression Major component is coarse type I collagen fibers ASSISTANT LECTURER FARAH E. ISMAEEL 1/2/2018
5
Bone cells Osteoprogenitor cells are located in the periosteum, endosteum, osteons, and perforating canals Osteoblasts are on the bone surfaces and synthesize osteoid matrix Osteocytes are mature osteoblasts, are branched, are located in lacunae, and use canaliculi for communication and exchange. maintain homeostasis of bone and blood concentrations of calcium and phosphate. Functions of bone can bear more weight than cartilage,
serve as a rigid skeleton for the body provide attachment sites for muscles and organs. Bone also protects the brain in the skull, heart and lungs in the thorax, and urinary and reproductive organs between the pelvic bones. hemopoiesis (blood cell formation), reservoirs for calcium, phosphate, and other minerals.
