3. I. Autocracy A country ruled by ONE PERSON
(king, queen, emperor, czar, or dictator)

4. Autocratic governments include: a. Communism
The government plans and controls all economic and political decisions.
The government owns all businesses and farms and provides its people with
- healthcare
- education
- welfare

5. b. Totalitarianism
A country whose government controls every aspect of its citizens’ lives (i.e. Franco’s Spain)

6. c. Dictatorship
A government where one person makes all the rules and decisions without input from anyone else and has absolute power.

7. d. Fascism
A country with a strong military that is led by a powerful dictator who forcibly suppresses opposition and criticism, and emphasizes an aggressive nationalism (and often racism).

8. Absolute Monarchy vs. Constitutional Monarchy
e. Absolute Monarchy:
A country ruled by a king or queen whose power is inherited and unlimited.
f. Constitutional Monarchy:
When the king or queen must follow the written law or constitution of their own country.
The monarchy shares governmental power with the elected legislature or serves as ceremonial leader of government.

A country ruled by the people.

10. a. Direct Democracy
A direct democracy is one in which the power to govern lies directly in the hands of the people (rather than being in the hands of their elected representatives).
Example: Ancient Athens

11. b. Republic / Indirect Democracy
A type of democracy in which the people’s elected representatives (not the people themselves) vote on legislation among themselves.
*The citizens who elected these officials (through direct democracy) have no say in which laws get passed and which ones don’t in a republic/ indirect democracy.
(i.e. the Senate and House of Representatives voting on Obamacare or whether to go to war)

12. 3. Oligarchy
A form of government in which all power is given to a few individuals or to members of a dominant class.
They rule by their own interest, especially in accumulating and maintaining wealth and privilege.

13. Anarchy A situation where there is no government.
This can happen after a Civil War in a country when the government has been destroyed and/or a group is fighting to take its place.
