SIX TYPES OF GOVERNMENT
1. Unitary – the central government holds nearly all the power 2. Confederation – local government has all the power Example:- Association of Southeast Asian Nations

3. Federal– power is shared between different levels of government Example:-India 4. Autocratic– the ruler has absolute power to do whatever he wishes and enforces whatever laws he chooses Example-North Korea

5. Oligarchy – “government by the few”; a small group takes over the government and makes all the decisions Example-China 6. Democratic– a great deal of power is left in the hands of the people; decisions are made by majority votes Example-India and Japan

TWO types of Democracy:
Parliamentary Democracy– the people elect a Parliament (legislature) that makes and carries out the laws for the country The leader is called a Prime Minister and is the head of the government he is chosen by the party that has the majority representatives in Parliament There is usually a “King” or “Emperor” that has no power (a “figurehead”)

TWO types of Democracy:
Presidential Democracy– a President is chosen separately from the legislature Legislature passes the laws, the President makes sure they are enforced The President is Head of State and head of the government Difference in a Prime Minister and a President: President is in a separate branch of government whereas the Prime Minister is part of the legislature

JAPAN Constitutional Monarchy Japan parliament is called the Diet
King or emperor’s power is limited by the Constitution Japan parliament is called the Diet 2 house parliament led by a prime minister and a cabinet of advisors All citizens over the age of 20 can vote The people have the real power in Japan The emperor before WW II was thought of as a god descended from the sun

INDIA Democracy World’s largest democracy
All citizens over the age of 18 can vote Elections held every 5 years Indira Gandhi was the first woman prime minister in India The country is secular (Secular=separate) and so it favors no special religion

CHINA Legislative assembly is called the National People’s Congress
Communist It is run as a one party dictatorship Legislative assembly is called the National People’s Congress They choose the President and Vice-President The President chooses the Premier (chief administrator of the government)

CHINA (continued…) Chinese communist government has some control over almost every aspect of Chinese life Citizens 18 and older can vote The first leader was Mao Tse-Tung
