2. Cold War 2
Containment Policy- U.S. Policy, prevent communism from spreading to new countries
America, France, Great Britain attempt to unify and create a Western German government
Soviet Union does not want Germany to be split into 2, Soviet mounts blockade of West Berlin (food and supplies forbidden to enter)
America responds with the Berlin Airlift, deliver 2.3 million tons of supplies over 10 month period, Soviet Union lifts blockade

3. Cold War 2
In 1949, Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) was formed, a month later German Democratic Republic (East Germany) was created
Soviet Union explodes first atomic bomb in 1949, leads to an arms race- building up of armies and weapons (atomic) to have more than your enemy

4. Cold War 2 New alliances formed
NATO- Many countries ally with the United States
Warsaw Pact- Many countries ally with the Soviet Union
Berlin Wall by Soviet Union
1) to prevent Germans escaping to W. Berlin
2) to cut communications
3) stop spread of western influence

5. Cold War 2
Soviet Union first to launch successful satellite into space- Sputnik I (1957), alarms Americans
In 1959, communist Fidel Castro successfully overthrows Cuban government...America alarmed at Communist government (and Soviet ally) only 90 miles for U.S.
President Kennedy sanctions an undercover operation (led by cuban exiles, but with U.S. Military support) to overthrow Castro

6. COLD WAR 2
Operation becomes known as the Bay of Pigs invasion- it is a disaster and an embarrassment for the U.S
After failed invasion, Soviet lead Krushchev sends Soviet advisers and eventually missiles to Cuba
America alarmed (not comfortable with missiles being located so close to U.S.)
Cuban Missile Crisis begins

7. Cold War 2
Kennedy discovers Soviet ships carrying missiles to cuba, decides to blockade Cuba to prevent ships from entering, threatens to fire on ships if they try to run the blockade
Many of Kennedy's advisers recommend an invasion or bombing of Cuba, during 13 days world waits expecting nuclear war
Agreement reached 1) USA pledges not to invade Cuba, quietly remove missiles from Turkey, Soviet union removes missiles from Cuba
