1 Reading and Discussing Charts

2 Charts/Graphs Learning how to read and discuss charts is very helpful.
It helps us learn and discuss facts. 30% of Canadians don’t eat cheese. 6 people in our class don’t use pencils.

3 Charts/Graphs

4 READING AND DISCUSSING PIE CHARTS

5 PIE CHARTS Pie charts are shaped like a pie.

6 Charts/Graphs We use a pie chart to show proportions (% and ½, ¼, etc.) 30% of Canadians don’t eat cheese. ½ of my book is good, but half of it is bad. Most of these people don’t watch TV.

7 Charts/Graphs Some ways to discuss pie charts: ____% of S + V.
Most S + V. #/# of S + V. 30% of Canadians don’t eat cheese. Most of these people don’t watch TV ½ of my book is good, but half of it is bad.

8 Discuss the chart below with your partner. Give your opinion about this.
Ex: 20% of students sleep after school. That’s strange, I think that is not correct. I never sleep after school.

9 READING AND DISCUSSING BAR GRAPHS

10 BAR GRAPHS Bar graphs are shaped like chocolate bars.

11 BAR GRAPHS We use bar graphs to count. We use them to show how many of something we have. 10 people had pie after school. 5 people didn’t have any food. More people ate pie. No one had cake.

12 BAR GRAPHS Some ways to discuss bar graphs: # S + V.
Measurement word + S + V. 10 people had pie after school. 5 people didn’t have any food. More people ate pie. No one had cake.

13 Discuss the graph below with your partner. Give your opinion about this.
Ex: Ten people normally use Iphones. This graph seems correct. I think less people use Android phones in China.

14 READING AND DISCUSSING LINE GRAPHS

15 LINE GRAPHS Line graphs are just lines.

16 Charts/Graphs We use them to show how something is connected.
We often use this when something increases or decreases. The more you eat, the more tired you get. Eating more makes you more tired. If you eat 8 times a day, you will probably be tired.

17 Charts/Graphs Some ways to discuss bar graphs:
The more/less + S + V, the more/less + S + V. Gerund causes + O Gerund makes S + adj/V If + S + V, S + V. The more you eat, the more tired you feel. Eating more causes sleepiness. Eating more makes you more tired. If you eat 8 times a day, you will probably be tired.

18 Discuss the graph below with your partner. Give your opinion about this.
Ex: If students drank 10 beers, they got a B- on their final exam. That makes sense. If you were drunk the night before, you will feel bad the next day.
