Sends scouts, find Roanoke Island Off the coast of today’s NC (called VA in the 1500s) Sends scouts twice First = 1585 = did not survive winter = colonist return to England Second = 1587 = led by John White = 91 men, 17 women, 9 children Virginia Dare first English child born in North America

C. The Lost Colony John White returns to England for supplies
War with Spain set back his return Came back three years later Colony deserted Only clue = Croatoan carved into a tree Croatoan Island = 50 miles away Bad weather prevented investigation Colonist never seen again

II. Jamestown A. Discouragement Failure of Roanoke
King James I = 1606 = renew England’s quest for a colony in North America Merchants pressed for a charter = a document that granted the right to form a colony

The Virginia Company Joint-stock Company = investors bought shares or part ownership hoping the company would make money and they would share the profits Find gold Trade in fish and furs Virginia Company of London = Dec = sent 144 settlers in three ships Sailed up the river flowing into a bay = name the river and new settlement Jamestown after their King

C. Jamestown No: gold Yes: hardships, disease, & hunger
Survive first two years because of John Smith John Smith Forced settlers to work Built ties with the Powhatan people & Chief Powhatan 1609 = Smith injured = returns to England

D. Jamestown Struggles Winter 1609-1610 = “the starving time”
Powhatan stop providing food More colonist arrive (replace those who died) Colonist start growing tobacco using seeds from the West Indies Planters all along the James River

E. More Settlers Virginia expands
John Rolfe marries Chief Powhatan’s daughter Pocahontas = native/colonist relationship improves Virginia Company sends women to Jamestown Marriage & children = result

III. VA Govt. A. Key to success
The Virginia Company began giving headright = land grants of 50 acres to settlers who paid their own way to the colony Key to success of colony Land ownership lured settlers

B. Burgesses 1619 = land-owning male colonists cast ballots for burgesses (representatives) Burgesses: Helped make laws First legislature in North America elected by the people

C. English Govt. By 1624 Virginia was growing in size
Shareholders of the Virginia company not making $ King James takes away charter Virginia = royal colony = directly under the control of the English govt.
