2. Railway upgrade plan – summary & key facts
Easter 2017 will see over 13,000 members of Network Rail’s orange army working around the clock to improve the network. It is estimated that we will invest over £70m in over 200 projects being delivered across Britain over this holiday period.
The biggest, most disruptive pieces of work planned are:
In and around London:
Crossrail East work continues in the Shenfield area disrupting travel in and out of Liverpool Street between 14th – 17th April
Crossrail East work will also affect travel between Highbury & Islington and Hackney Wick stations between 14th – 17th April
Waterloo station will see work between 14th – 16th April where passengers will see reduced or diverted services
Paddington station will see reduced services (every 30 mins rather than every 15) to Heathrow Airport on 15th April
Thameslink programme - Cannon Street will have no services over all four days of the bank holiday
Thameslink programme - London Bridge, Waterloo East and Charing Cross will have no Southeastern trains on Friday and Saturday, a normal service on Sunday and a slightly reduced service on Monday.
Victoria will see no Southern or Gatwick Express services on Sunday 16th April
Elsewhere:
Significant work around Motherwell and Carstairs will see lines closed between Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central, with bus services in place on 15th – 16th April
Northern Hub enhancements continue which see the re-modelling of Salford Central station
Bath Spa station will is being modernised in the preparation for new, longer trains which will enter service later in the year
Major Airports:
Gatwick Express – no services on Sunday 16th April between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport
Heathrow Express and Heathrow Connect on Saturday 15th April will see services reduced to every half-hour

4. Network Rail Managed Stations
Cannon Street: Will have no services over all four days of the Bank Holiday.
Charing Cross, London Bridge and Waterloo East: Will have no Southeastern trains on Friday and Saturday, a normal service on Sunday and a slightly reduced service on Monday.

King’s Cross: Normal service
Liverpool Street: No trains 14th – 17th April between London Liverpool Street and Ingatestone/Billericay, bus services will be in place. On 16th April, buses will replace trains between Ingatestone/Southend Victoria and Newbury Park (London Underground Tube Station), as well between Wickford and Southminster.
Paddington: 15th April - Heathrow Express and Heathrow Connect will have services every half-an-hour. Between 14th – 17th April Bath Spa long-distance services between Bristol Temple Meads and London Paddington will be diverted, and will not stop at Bath Spa or Chippenham
St. Pancras: Normal service
Victoria: 16th April - there will no Southern services or Gatwick Express – diversions to/from London Bridge.
Waterloo: Reduced and diverted services between 14th – 16th April.

17. Anglia: Crossrail work, 14th – 17th April
What’s happening:
The Crossrail East work continues with switches and crossing renewal at Forest Gate, bridge strengthening at Manor Park and Shenfield and Overhead Line Equipment renewal at Ilford

Passenger Impact:
Friday 14th until Monday 17th there will be no Greater Anglia trains between London Liverpool Street and Ingatestone/Billericay. Sunday 16th April will include no services to Southend Victoria/Southminister. A bus service will be in place at Newbury for further travel.
Use the London Underground Central Line between London Liverpool Street and Newbury Park.
For TfL Rail customers buses will be in place along the entire route.
Passenger Benefit:
Once fully opened in 2019, Crossrail will increase London’s rail transport capacity by 10% and cut journey times. When completed there will be 12 trains an hour in each direction Shenfield – Central London at peak times

Major improvement work as part of the Thameslink programme continues between London Charing Cross / London Cannon Street and London Bridge

All routes via London Charing Cross and London Cannon Street and London Bridge, Southeastern passengers.
Passenger Impact:
On Friday and Saturday, trains will be diverted and start/terminate at either London Victoria or New Cross
On Sunday and Monday, trains to and from London Cannon Street will start/terminate at New Cross
On Sunday, a normal service will run from London Charing Cross. On Monday some services have been amended
Passenger Benefit:
When the Thameslink Programme is completed in 2018, journeys will be improved, with new spacious trains every 2 – 3 minutes through central London at peak times

21. Western: Crossrail work, Paddington station, 14th – 17th April
What are we doing?
Crossrail Works continue and will see work at Paddington Station with platform and drainage works taking place. There will be a reduced number of services (60%) running with only platforms 1 to 6 open
What will this mean for passengers?
A reduced service will be in place with Heathrow Connect and Heathrow Express services leaving every half-an-hour on 15th April, rather than every 15 mins
Passenger Benefit:
Once fully opened in 2019, Crossrail will increase London’s rail transport capacity by 10% and cut journey times. There will be better connections and more services from Heathrow, Maidenhead, West Drayton and Reading.

22. Wessex – Waterloo station, 14th – 16th April
What are we doing?
We will be renewing points and a signal gantry, platforms 1-10 will be closed to allow the work to be carried out.
What will this mean for passengers?
South West Train customers, an amended and reduced service will operate on most routes to and from London Waterloo. Services may also start from an alternative station, have additional stops or divert via an alternative route
Passenger Benefit:
When completed Waterloo station will be able to cope with increased capacity, will have better station facilitates and longer platforms to allow longer trains to run to London suburban stations.

24. London North Western (North) – Northern Hub, 13th – 24th April
What’s happening:
Continuation of the work going on at Ordsall Chord which, when complete, will improve connections between Manchester Victoria – Manchester Oxford Road – Manchester Piccadilly. This Easter will see remodelling work taking place at Salford Central station. Work will include widening an existing viaduct, strengthening structures and demolition and replacement of Chapel Street bridge
Routes and TOCs affected: (13th April – 24th April)

Passenger Impact:
A replacement bus service will operator between Manchester Victoria and Salford Crescent (14th – 16th April)

Passenger Benefit:
When the Ordsall Chord project is completed in December 2017 it will create new and direct links to Manchester Airport from the north of England as well as connecting Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria train stations for the first time

What’s happening:
Network Rail will be removing old, life expired rail, sleepers and ballast (the foundation stones the track sits on)

What are we doing?
Network Rail is modernising Bath Spa station in preparation for new, longer trains which will enter services later this year. The work will include making the platforms wider and will also reduce the stepping distance to and from trains. Platform 1 will also be extended to accommodate the new trains, with this work expected to finish by Autumn

Passenger Impact:
Trains between Portsmouth and Cardiff will run between Portsmouth and Swindon; customers to change at Swindon for onward travel
A train shuttle service will run between Bristol Temple Meads and Cardiff Central
Long-distance services between Bristol Temple Meads and London Paddington will be diverted and will not stop at Bath Spa or Chippenham
Trains that normally run between Westbury and Bristol Temple Meads will run between Weymouth and Westbury
What will this mean for passengers?
There will be no trains through Bath Spa station. Trains will be diverted and replacement buses will run from Bath Spa to Bristol Temple Meads, Chippenham and all stations to Frome
There will be coaches between Castle Cary and Bristol Temple Meads to connect with Weymouth services
Passenger Benefit:
The upgrading of the infrastructure will allow the route to be electrified. Electric trains are better for the environment, they are quieter for those on board the train and those living close to the railway
