Your “thing” is by definition your category. What I mean is that there’s no dispute that the thing can be categorized the way you suggest because it is commonly assumed to fall under that category. For example, “I’m going to evaluate Kate as a professor.” Because I am a professor and there’s no dispute, I just am one, you’d need to categorize Kate under something that’s not necessarily a fact that everyone can agree on: “Kate is the most brilliant professor at Penn State.” You’d have to prove that by holding Kate up to criteria you develop that define a brilliant professor.

7. Watch for “convenient criteria” which is criteria that only applies to your “thing.” You should be able to check other “things” against your criteria.

8. An evaluation paper is not a comparison paper
An evaluation paper is not a comparison paper. You need to choose one “thing” to evaluate against specific criteria that come from a category.
