3. Highlight of Current Activities
IEEE Cloud Computing Initiative testbed activity
Developing environment for creating & testing protocols for IEEE P2302, Draft Standard for Intercloud Interoperability & Federation (SIIF)
Partnering with universities & research institutions around the globe that have cloud computing resources
Goal: Create a well-connected standards platform & testbed that will be used to experiment with other IEEE cloud computing products & services (such as e-learning education)
Housed in IEEE-SA Industry Connections
Participants place cloud implementation of their choice in a connected datacenter in a specific geography
Researchers contribute to the open-source implementation of the Intercloud protocol suite, while adapting the protocols to the cloud in use
Experiment with cloud federation through these services, further develop protocols, ontologies & explore the topology issues for scalability
Feed results to SIIF standards project

4. Strategic Direction
Focus on intercloud interoperability, engaging university & industry organizations for software development & testbed location hosting
Provide a resource for cloud computing policy related issues
Optimize the unique IEEE platform of education, publications, conferences & standards to explore new opportunities in the cloud computing space & to connect stakeholders
Provide a venue where the best minds come together to innovate & work together to advance cloud technology for the benefit of humanity

5. Challenges
Cloud services do not have a well defined set of standards, though there are various organizations working on different standards
Lack of interoperability standards for cloud computing
Individual cloud services vendors continue to promote their own cloud services

6. Next Steps / Actions Focus on intercloud
Complete agreements for organizations involved in the Intercloud testbed & execute
Leverage the IEEE community of experts & technologist to help solve the comparability & interoperability challenges in cloud computing
