1 Thursday, February 4, 2016 Aim: Students will be able to understand factors that influence motivation Do Now: Suppose you are absorbed in reading a novel and a friend asks you a question. You stop and ask, “What did you say?” As soon as the words leave your mouth, you realize you can recall your friend’s exact words. What is the reason for your ability to play back these words? a. Aim: Students will be able to understand factors that influence motivation A desire for significant accomplishments; for mastery of things, people, or ideas; for attaining a high standard. Intrinsic Motivation Extrinsic Motivation A desire to perform a behavior for its own sake. A desire to perform a behavior due to promised rewards or threats of punishment.

Leadership Style Task Leadership: goal oriented leadership that sets standards and organizes work. Social Leadership: group oriented leadership that builds teamwork, mediates conflict and offers support .

Aim: Students will be able to understand factors that influence motivation Leadership Perspectives Theory Y Theory X Assumes that, given challenge and freedom, workers are motivated to achieve self-esteem and to demonstrate their competence and creativity. Assumes that works are basically lazy, error-prone, and extrinsically motivated by money.

When Motives Conflict Approach-Approach conflict: must choose between two desirable outcomes Avoidance-Avoidance Conflict: you must choose between two undesirable outcomes Approach-Avoidance Conflict: one event or goal has both attractive and unattractive features Multiple Approach-Avoidance Conflict: must choose between two or more things (each of which has desirable and undesirable features)

Aim: Students will be able to understand factors that influence motivation Emotion Flowchart Assignment Grading Criteria: Must include description/definition of 3 theories (probably within your flowchart): James- Lange Theory, Cannon-Bard Theory, Schacter’s Two Factor Theory Must create an original example for each theory Must use color (color boxes will help your brain remember) On back: which do you most agree with? Explain why?
