2 Vocabulary Practice!

3 POVERTY (NOUN) definition- the state of being poor, lacking something
synonyms- destitution, indigence There are millions of people all over the world who live in extreme poverty.

4 EXCURSION (NOUN) Definition- Going out or forth into something; a short trip Synonyms- adventure, trip, jaunt My family and I like to go on excursions on the weekends and explore local hangouts.

5 COWER (VERB) Definition- to move back or bend down because you’re afraid Synonyms- hide, grovel, cringe Knowing he was going to be beaten, the boy began to cower in the corner.

6 GUMPTION (NOUN) Definition- courage or confidence in your ability Synonyms: prudence, courage, wit It took me a while to work up the gumption to ask my parents about the party.

7 GLINT (NOUN OR VERB) Definition- a small flash of light or emotion reflected in a person’s eyes Synonyms- glimmer, light I could see the mischievous glint in his eye and knew he was going to play a trick on me.

8 SCENARIO (NOUN) Definition- a description of what could possibly happen Synonyms- scene, script, possibility All kinds of crazy scenarios flashed through my mind as I lay in bed, trying to fall asleep.

9 INCIDENT (NOUN) Definition- an unexpected and usually unpleasant thing that happens Synonyms- event, occurrence, episode I tried to remember all of the details of the incident so that I could report it to the principal.

10 SCOWL (NOUN OR VERB) Definition- a facial expression of displeasure
synonyms- frown, pout, grimace I could tell by the scowl on my mom’s face that she was mad at me.

11 TOLERATE (VERB) definition- to allow something to exist, happen, or be done Synonyms- accept, permit, allow My mother will not tolerate any running in her house.

12 SIGNIFICANTLY (ADV) Definition- In a way that is large or important enough to be noticed or have an effect synonyms- importantly, largely He has lost weight significantly since last year.
