Persuade The teacher entered the room with a report of the latest benchmark scores. “Some of you will be in English I again next year if you don’t start taking this class seriously.” Suddenly, all eyes were on her as she explained the results. “How many of you have been to tutoring this year?” she asked. Three students cheerfully raised their hands. The others looked down in shame. “Do you want to have nice things one day? Do you want to own a house, car, name-brand clothing, and have a family?” she went on. “All of those things take work. Real work. You cannot skip class and expect to pass. Your presence is your opportunity to grow and learn. Think of school as your job, and you’ll never miss another day. Don’t wait until your junior and senior year because by then, it will be too late. No college or university will want someone with failing grades filling up their transcript. How, then, will you turn this around? She asked. It was very clear in this moment, that something would have to change.

Inform The teacher entered the room at approximately 7:45 a.m. and noticed that her desk was disheveled. She looked around to find papers on the floors, desks flipped on their sides, and she immediately exited to find security. Once security was called, she gave a full report, but was not able to provide any leads on a suspect. The case is still open pending further investigation from administration, and at this time, it cannot be determined whether anything was stolen.

Entertain The teacher entered the room with a smile on her face because she knew in eight short hours she would never have to see their faces again. This very thought made her giddy with excitement, and she was already planning her victory dance when the final bell rang. As the time grew near, her heart was racing with anticipation. “It’s almost over,” she thought to herself. All year long she dreaded cleaning that hamster cage, and at last she’d be free from the rank smell of those pesky critters.

Putting it all together…
On an index card, write your name, date, and block in the top right corner. Expand the sentence below using imagery, mood, diction, and tone to demonstrate author’s purpose. Imitate the samples I have just provided you. The girl cried in the corner of the room. 1 & 4: persuade 2: inform 3 & 5: entertain
