Map Tools Legend/Key- a tool that identifies the symbols on a map and what they represent. Scale- helps determine real distances between points on a map.

Cardinal Directions Cardinal Directions are a huge part of using a map. What are Cardinal Directions? North, South, East, and West. Whenever you are looking at a map make sure North is going away from you. A compass rose will show you what the directions on a map are.

Latitude Lines of latitude are drawn in an east-west direction. Measure north to south. Longitude Lines of longitude are drawn in a north-south direction. Measure east to west.

The intersecting lines help us find the location of places.
Equator- Is an imaginary line that circles the globe halfway between the North and South poles.

Prime Meridian- An imaginary line drawn from the North Pole through Greenwich England to the South pole. Using latitude and longitude we can measure distances using degrees. Degrees are further divided into minutes. There are 60 minutes in a degree.
